Uruguayan Comida!!

WOW the steaks in Uruguay are so much better than in the US.  I am not sure if it is because of how it is prepared or if they just have better quality cows. :-)  The stable for Uruguayan food and the most popular is the "asado". It is a variety of meats cooked over firewood in special ovens called the "parrillero".

The chivito sandwich is the "Uruguay Sandwich" and most popular. The sandwich consists of one or two thin pieces of meat, ham, bacon, cheese, tomato, fried egg, olives, onions and mayonnaise.

While visiting the Mercado del Puerto we had lunch at one of the restaurants. I can't remember what this was called but it is meat with bacon wrapped around it, cheese in the middle and some red peppers.
Another popular dish is the "milanesa" either as an entree or sandwich. It is meat which is fried after being covered in milled bread and beaten eggs. I ordered the chicken milanesa sandwich below and thought it was just going to be one sandwich but as you can see that was not the case. As I have learned quickly, order what you want but eat what you get.
Hot dogs are actually really popular here but they are not like an American hot dog. The meat is more consist to sausage and has a meatier flavor.

They don't skimp on their portion! This is Salteado al wok con pollo. Which is basically chicken stir fry with noodle.
Best pizza we have had is at Bar 21 by our apartment.

One of my guilty pleasures is getting ice cream or gelato in a "chicka" size. The chicka size (shown below) is $2.50 so kind of expensive but oh so good!
Thought I would post some things that are different from the states. For example your milk and orange juice come in either boxes or bags in 1 liter size. As you can see, they are not that big so you need to buy 2 - 3 boxes to get you through the week.
